The light field howitzer (LFH) 18 L/28 was in use in the divisional artillery regiments of the German Wehrmacht. Each battery was equipped with four guns. An article in a German Army magazine, dated September 1939 describes in detail the required action to make a battery ready for combat.
After the guns were put into firing positions, it was necessary to determine their exact positions for coordinating the firefight. This was done by a sergeant using a special direction finder, called "Richtkreis". The picture on the right shows a sergeant determining the gun positions. The two soldiers in front of him are members of individual gun crews who took the information and reported it later to their gun commanders.
