Marching Soldiers

In the following I describe the different 6 - 7.5 cm figures made by Hausser/Elastolin. Reggie Polaine showed in his book about toy soldiers seven different infantry soldiers with a rifle on their shoulder. Comparing this to my own collection, I realized this was only the beginning. In the catalogue about military figures (Militärische Aufstellfiguren 1994/95) I described under number 10/3162 twenty-one different figures made by Hausser/Elastolin. But even after this catalogue was printed, I was still finding more figures, which I had not yet described. Altogether I now know of 26 different figures of this type of model which are 6 to 7.5 cm high.

Interestingly enough the existence of most of the figures can be shown by using the old Hausser/Elastolin catalogues and price lists from 1925 to 1943, which were available to me. There were very few figures I could not find and identify in these catalogues. The table to this article does show which figures have been produced and offered.

There are two important curiosities to note :

  1. for different figures the same number has been used in different years,
  2. for the same figure different numbers have been used in different years.

This is one of the reasons why I introduced a complete new numbering system to all these figures. The logic behind it also shows which models have been produced using a different form (e.g. E8) and which models have only be painted in a different way or have only been fitted with a different head or accessories (e.g. E7-1, E7-2 and E7-3). For some models the only difference was that the uniform was painted completely in one green colour, instead of grey trousers and black belts.
