The heavy field howitzer 18 L/29.6 was introduced
into the German Wehrmacht in 1933/34 as a replacement for the outdated
heavy field howitzer 13. It was used in batteries of 4 guns each in the
division and army artillery units until the end of the war. The gun was
towed mainly by motorized vehicle, however the field manual of 1939 also
shows the option for towing it by horse power.
